The Subject is Closet Space

Welcome to another Tuesdays with Dori. I'm yoor host, Dori. *wavy paws*

Today I want to discuss Closet Space, or lack thereof. Let me say right up fwont, I do not purrsonally own a closet. Nor do I see actual need for closets.

It is my opinion that closets are the Devil's invention, meant to inflict fwustwashun and anger issues by tempting hoomoms to be so sentimental about old stuff, that they cannot bear to let go, even long after it has ceased to spark joy. Not exactly a quote from Marie Kondo, but if yoo have overstuffed closets, then yoo get my point.

Before I go much further, let me first give yoo my Bweaking Nooz report.

It is now exactly one year as of the 18th that we traveled 16 hours through a dark and stormy night from our beloved home with two huge walk-in attics, plus four, no five bedrooms with large closets, to this excrusheeatingly tiny cottage wif two huge water bowls in the Catio.

Exactly two weeks after arriving, Momma started campaigning to move. Daddy ignored her as he was involved in fixing all the hidden secret stuff done by the former owner aka The Do-It-Yourselfer-With-The-Skills-of-a-High-Schooler-Taking-Shop-Class.Now most of the stuff is fixed or upgraded, or totally ripped out and replaced with professional skilled carpentry. But alas, the closets are still jammed packed. And there are still unopened boxes in the teeny tiny attic over the garage.

Now, let me reassure yoo, my pawrents purged really good during the year previous to our move. Momma even donated huge boxes of her precious books. But it wasn't enough. She's now using kitchen cupboards to store stuff that previously took up room in her office. Stuff like manuscripts, and Life magazines from the 1940s, and magazines like new from the 80s and 90s that she plans to sell one of these days. But in the meantime there is no place to store them.

Photographs! Oh my Cod! Most of them are of her precious kitties over the past ... century. They have been taken out of photo albums and now need to be purged of those that are out of focus, or she has no idea who the cat is. Yeah, there are a lot of cats. And photographs of zoo animals. Honestly, yoo can only have just so many photos of lemurs, warthogs and blue macaws in yoor keeper pile.

So, anyway, Momma has a box that will be donated every week, and every day several items need to be placed in the box. Once in the box, no taking back, it's the law!

Sadly when we moved Daddy lost his Man Cave where he displayed his awesome collection of sports meowmoribilia. He's a Detroit sports fan, and went to a lot of trouble to have items framed and signed by the aging players. Now he is unable to display all but one piece. It is stacked in the Cat Apartment closet, along with boxes filled with mewvees, and beloved books, record albums (even though we don't own a record player) and kitty toys that are expensive but totally unappreciated by the current members of the Wonderpurr Gang. Plus jackets and winter outer wear stuff, even though the coldest it gets here at our house is probably 60 degwees.

The problem is Momma who is sentimental. She went through a box of cards sent to my big brofur Herman as far back as 2011 when he first joined the Twitter Anipals, and told Daddy she cannot get rid of a single card. They are filled with wonderpurr notes from our furends, and just reading through them is like a trip down Meowmory Lane. She also has that trouble with cards from family no longer with us.

One of her most precious boxes contains collars and toys from all the kitties Mom has loved since the first kitten given to her by her Grandpa. So, I guess the need for more closet space is a valid one. I mean, one day my Dolly Meow will be in that box, along with my pwetty purrple and pink flower collar with my DORI tag.

I guess being sentimental isn't such a bad thing, especially if the items spark joy when you remember why you kept them in the first place.

This is Dori, yoor Bweaking Nooz repurrtor saying...

  2. I cleared out my dresser drawers and my closet space some time back. I've not bought anything this year either. I can actually see my clothes on the hangers and know what they are. There is space in between everything. Also the shoes went too. It's wonderful, but it was tough to do.

    Have a fabulous day. ♥

  3. It is very hard to get rid of things when attached to precious memories. One reason our humans haven’t moved in 37 years. May be time to get a storage unit. Cooper Murphy opens closets, so Dad had to put a lock on the one in the master bedroom. Once he gets in, everyone else follows. Sending hugs to all. 5. There is never enough closet space! My problem is shoes. I have countless pairs I will never wear again. If I could jam my fat feet back into my 6" heels I would fall flat on my face and break something. I really should donate them all to a charity shop.

    1. Oh My Cod! 6" heels sound dangerous. Take pikchures of the shoes and donate them. Then yoo can look back on how pwetty they are without hurting yoorself. Photos cannot hurt yoo.

  8. Oh my mouses, Dori. My peeps complains 'bout closets, too. Never enough closets, she says. Why, a few months ago, Peepers got an ice cream maker. You know where it is? Livin' room. MOUSES! Yup, she says she has to empty out a kitchen cupboard before puttin' it away. MOUSES!

  9. Dori, Hi. Grammy had to purge when she moved here 26 years ago. Once she got here she had to purge drastically again. Still too much 'stuff.' She has downsized numerous times since but still closets and storage are full. Next on her list to purge is her books. She says 1/2 of them have to go. Time will tell but we cannot see her parting with many of them. *giggles* BTW will your purple underpants go in the memory box? Curious kittens want to know.
